fuel gauge

went wheeling a while back and now my gas gauge is not reading right. IT sits past full and when you turn on the ignition it moves farther past full. It looks like it is reading but the needel skipped teeth or something. Could this be a stuck sending unit or is it the gauge. The day it happened we had to bounce the truck over a few rocks so I am guessing that is what did it.
Any ideas?
thanks
